Taraweeh is a special prayer performed by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan after the obligatory Isha (night) prayer. It consists of extra units of prayer (rak’ahs), traditionally prayed in sets of two, and is offered only during Ramadan.
The word “Taraweeh” comes from the Arabic root meaning “to rest and relax,” as worshippers take short breaks between sets of prayers.
Taraweeh is highly recommended (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) and was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who sometimes led it in congregation and other times prayed it individually. Over time, it became common for Muslims to pray it in congregation at the mosque, especially during Ramadan nights, where the entire Qur’an is often recited over the month.
It is a time of spiritual reflection, increased worship, and connection with the Qur’an, offering great rewards and blessings.
